Our Vision
It’s simple. You bought it, you own it. Period.
The Repair Association is at the forefront of ensuring consumers have the ability and freedom to repair, customize, and resell their own devices. We advocate for policies that protect and expand these rights, ensuring that every consumer and repair professional can access the parts, tools, and information necessary to repair their devices.
Right to Repair Principles
Access to Diagnostic Tools: The right for consumers and independent repair providers to access the same diagnostic and repair tools that are available to the original manufacturer.
Software and Firmware: Granting the ability to bypass software locks that prevent repairs, as long as it doesn't infringe upon proprietary software or intellectual property rights.
3
Documentation: Provide the same repair manuals, schematic diagrams, and other documentation to facilitate complete repairs.
4
Anti-Retaliation: Protection against voiding warranties or other retaliatory measures from manufacturers when consumers or independent shops perform repairs.
5
Contracts: Prevent manufacturers from selling products and then using unfair and deceptive contracts, such as End User License Agreements, to modify the nature of the sale to include limitations on use that only belong to the equipment owner
6
Exemptions: Understanding that certain industries or product categories, like motor vehicles, may be exempt due to existing agreements or laws.
Replacement Parts: Ensuring that consumers can purchase genuine replacement parts at fair market prices, either directly from the manufacturer or through third-party vendors.

Enforcement: Utilizing the power of the state Attorney General for enforcement and issuing fines as incentives for state-led compliance. Alternative enforcement mechanisms can also be considered.
